Giveaway: Silver ring from PoshLocket

PoshLocket, a new online jewelry store that caters to women that "wants a little something for everyday wear"contacted me about doing a giveaway. They sell a variety of styles on their site at very affordable prices. I was offered to select my own piece so I chose the Mia stacked ring and I've already worn it several times since I received it late last week. It's a simple everyday ring that looks good on its own or with a slew of sparkles.

Not So Terrible Twos- Two Year Anniversary

Dang y'all where did the time go? Slow Southern Style turned two years old this month, damn they grow up fast. Thanks to all of the new readers out there, the people who have been here from the start, and the occasional lurker. Y'all mean the world to me.

Here are a few quick pictures from the past two years.  Slow Southern Style started from humble beginnings and remains a culmination of the Southern based designers that I love, off the beaten path shops, and random personal style anecdotes.  Thanks for all of the love and support and don't forget to come out and meet some of the great designers featured on this blog for Objects of Adornment at Du Mois Gallery on October 8th. Even if you can't make it to the opening the show runs through October. I hope to see a few of y'all on Freret Street!

Four Fall Favorites For Friday

For as long as I can remember I was only ever interested in wearing silver jewelry. Gold seemed too garish but lately I've been craving some change so I'm slowly attempting to stock up on gold. I've never been the type to just buy jewelry to match a particular outfit, that's boring.  Jewelry should say something about your personality, otherwise it's just noise. While I'm on the hunt for the perfect pieces  I found these baubles that I'd add to my accessories arsenal in a heartbeat.
Muted gold cut out cuff bracelet from Lucky

Cute Kate Spade bow adds a touch of gilded girliness

Black & gold earrings perfect for Saints season

Double disco means double the fun from Fossil with these drop earrings

What types of jewelry are you searching for to add to your collection?

Objects of Adornment: An art show for fashion

Style is what comes from a careful culmination of exquisite, highly personal objects of adornment. From a simple bow tie to a handmade necklace finishing touches add personality and depth to our outward appearance. Clothing functions as our own wearable art that we can take with us wherever we go and is our most accessible way to express ourselves.

I'm really pleased to announce a project that I've been working on for the past few months with some of my favorite Louisiana fashion designers. You are officially invited to Objects of Adornment, an art show at Du Mois Gallery featuring the works of Alicia Zenobia, Ben Azevedo, Lacey Dupre, and Kaci Thomassie. Each of these artists have a fresh perspective on fashion and are creating unique, wearable pieces of art in their own way. Even if you can't make it to the opening the show will be up for the month of October so you can view the pieces at your convenience.

RSVP on the Facebook event page and I can't wait to see everyone there!

Live the good life

Sometimes it is really easy to talk myself out of doing something good for me, like doing a yoga class or going to the gym. Okay I'm not gonna lie, I do it all the time actually. Suzy Rivera, owner of Life, a yoga studio and boutique in New Orleans really understands my dilemma and tries to make it easier for people to effortlessly incorporate "something good" into their daily routine. One way to do this is by creating a wardrobe that takes you from the yoga mat to the grocery store or to class without having to lug around a bulky gym bag or sacrificing your style.  Life carries its own private label clothing, which are supremely comfortable, stylish and affordable. All of the outfits featured here retail for under $100!

Great leggings are a must during winter and the ones featured throughout this post can carry you through your day, no matter what your planned activities are. This striped henley tunic is great paired with the charcoal bottoms and both can be worn in a variety of ways. Grey leggings are a softer, more interesting alternative to basic black and can be easily matched to a variety of colors.

Since I'm 5'1 I don't wear a lot of long dresses. Okay I never wear long dresses since they tend to overwhelm my frame but I liked this maxi dress from the Life lifestyle line. Pair it with a low slung belt, or layer it with a sweater on chillier days. This one is so easy that I ended up purchasing it for myself!

All too often I see women schlepping around town in workout clothes or worse yet, pajamas.  Don't let the quest for comfort cloud your good judgement. Put down the running shorts and put on something equally as comfortable but way more stylish. Everything I'm wearing here would be perfect in the yoga studio or out running errands. Just throw on a great necklace, add a bracelet and you are dressed for the day.

So how what do you wear when you want to strike a yoga pose but look great doing it?

Invade NOLA Book Release Party

I typically reserve non-fashion related banter for the likes of my social media accounts but I have much love for Justin Shiels and what he does with Invade NOLA, not to mention  I'm also an occasional contributor on the website. Needless to say I'm more than happy to help get the word out about the Invade NOLA book release party this Thursday. It's free with your RSVP through Event Brite. See y'all there!

Fall Favorites For Friday

This week's fall favorites were inspired by a Slow Southern Styling client that needed to up the ante when it came to her daily work bag. She needed something stylish yet big enough to schlep her laptop, paperwork, and other daily essentials in when she is mobile.  These are big enough to carry it all and will take you from the desk to happy hour or school to your favorite coffee shop all while maintaining a sense of style.

New Orleans' Anthropologie One Year Anniversary

Last Friday I had the pleasure of being invited to the New Orleans Anthropologie to partake in their one year anniversary festivities. There were a number of events taking place but I settled on a  jewelry making class with Cynthia Sheridan, a Houston based designer.  Along with her sister Lorena Rodriguez,  Sheridan creates pieces that "transmit soul and spirit to the metals and minerals" under their De Petra jewelry line. It was a real treat being taught how to make one of the sister's signature pieces, a necklace pouch filled with protective talismans. The sisters were excellent teachers and I can't wait to try my hand at making more.  Pick up your own special DePetra bijoux online at Anthro.

Lots of pretty thread to choose from

Blogger iPhone App

Just testing out the new blogger iPhone app, don't mind me. Has anyone else used it yet? What do you think? It's really simple, I doubt I'd use this on a daily basis but it could be great for coverage on the go.

Fashion's Night Out in New Orleans

Fashion's Night Out was this Thursday at Saks Fifth Avenue and I was thrilled that Slow Southern Style was featured in the blogger lounge. The night was filled with DJs on all three floors, a fun fashion scavenger hunt, running into familiar faces, drooling over beautiful clothes, and lots of champagne.

Can I be honest with y'all here? I definitely pulled this outfit together in haste. The only reason I wore these loafers is because I didn't have time to paint my toenails, one of the downfalls of only possessing open toe heels.

Chanel of Chanel Craves is without a doubt one of my favorite Southern Fashion Bloggers. She's always so perfectly put together, pretty, and she laughs at my dumb jokes. Her boyfriend looked equally well put together as well!
 Speaking of Chanel....
Samantha from Feet First! Samantha did a guest post on Slow Southern Style so it was a real pleasure to finally meet her in person. This picture is a hoot, note that she is squatting and I'm standing on tip toes and she is still taller than me.
I finally met cutie pie Dalton of the Warehouse District and his mom. They were so nice!

Plenty of Marc Jacobs to ogle

Sweet Slow Southern Style reader Kasimu came out to Saks after hearing me talk about it on Twitter AND he was the best dressed gentleman of the night. I just love a guy that can sport a bow tie and a pocket square!

Big thanks to all of my friends that came to hang out, I had a blast chatting with y'all and hope to see each and every one of you again soon. For additional pictures from the evening be sure to check out the Facebook page.

Slow Southern Styling

After a few nice words of encouragement and a lot of support I'm proud to announce a new little venture I'm starting up, Slow Southern Styling.  Just think of me as your personal stylist for the New Orleans area.

My first client was Megan, a young entrepreneur who was looking to cull her closet and figure out how to freshen up what she already owns. Megan has a lot of basics, and by a lot I mean black leggings for days. She also had a lot of hand me downs clogging her closet and pieces she picked up at clothing swaps that were good but not good for her. I first assessed her entire wardrobe and yanked out what she didn't need. Anything that wasn't in good condition had to go, along with unnecessary multiples. Megan has some great pieces, like an enviable cardigan collection but she needed to sort the bad from the good.

Next we assessed what was left. She has great style but relies too heavily on basics so it just took a little convincing to get her to try wearing pieces in new ways. With my creative eye we were able to compose some great, easy outfits with items she already owns. Everything featured here came from her closet!

Megan took notes the entire time to make it easy to remember my suggestions. We made sure to figure out where she needs to fill in the gaps (more shoes!) and how to perk up her basics (better jewelry she'll be excited to wear).

Interested in booking your own Slow Southern Styling session? I'm available by appointment on Fridays and Saturdays and can be reached at nolagurl{at}gmail{dot{com} if you'd like to learn more about the process and my package rates visit my Slow Southern Styling website. I'm looking forward to hearing from y'all soon!

Fall Favorites For Friday

If you've followed Slow Southern Style since the beginning you know I love doing themed weekly posts. Mannequin Monday, Tattoo Tuesdays, and my new weekly guest posts have been fun but now that we are in September I can't stop thinking about my fall wardrobe and how I'm going to build upon what I already own. At the end of each week I'm going to introduce y'all to my Fall Favorites For Friday with a different theme for each post.

Color blocking has been talked about extensively all over the internet but this Diane Von Furstenburg dress deserves a nod. We all know it won't cool down until the end of October so this dress can be worn as is then layered when the air turns crisp.

Color blocked DVF for less than $200!
Paper bag waists are another big trend, this one in a fun tangerine with a high waist. I like mixing orange with charcoal grey to avoid looking like I'm celebrating Halloween early.

Jil Sander paper bag high waist skirt

At this time of year I also start riding my bike more  but just because I'm on two wheels doesn't mean I want to look like a bike messenger all the time.  This cross body bag is dressy enough to bring to a nice dinner and the burnt orange is an interesting alternative to brown.

While wide leg jeans are making a comeback for fall it's not surprising that the sexy secretary look is gaining ground again. Avoid looking frumpy by keeping the blouse slightly sheer for an alluring look.

So what do you think of the trends for fall? What are you excited to wear when the weather cools off a bit?
